Read 10th Pass Pern's history!
Towards the end of the second century in the new 'Thread-Free-Pern,' High Reaches Weyr collapsed. Exactly what happened is unclear, but that the Shadow Syndicate had a large hand in it. The graceful, chilly Weyr and its Hold were gone forever, and many of the lives who had called the mountains home.
Some survived, of course, and they relocated.
It was Weyrwoman Wanna and her Weyrleader, S'donner, who led their sad people further SouthWest, hearts still heavy with grief. They needed to move fast. Around Pern, Holds had cheered for High Reaches fall. Dragons were no longer neccessary. This was to be made clear. Wanna and S'donner (and their dragons, Gold Henrath and Bronze Jenayith) needed to establish leadership and tithes, before any chance of such a thing was possible.
And they did. They established themselves quickly and efficiently halfway between the original High Reaches, and Tillek Hold. The weather was by far warmer, only snowing in the very late December through the very early February, and they were situated by a large lake. They named their Weyr for that lake, renowned for its crystalline waters.
More and more turns passed, Wanna and her Weyrleader were now scant memories for those who were already fifty turns dead. Fort Weyr had fallen. The first Weyr, gone.
The current Weyrwoman, Dillen of Garateth, now had a great deal more land to care for. Crystal Waters had become a chafeur service, of sorts. It was the only way, it seemed, that Dragons were of any use. The Weyrleaders no longer had any authority over the Holds, and she was hopeless to do anything about it.
It wouldn't be for another few hundred turns that anything would change.
Crystal Waters Weyr had long since lost its last natural bred Queen. But the headwoman's daughter, Thaira, had gone to White Sands Weyr, where she had successfully Impressed Falconth. She had refused to stay, and had come up with quite a few excuses before she could finally return to Crystal Waters, some six turns after Impression.
Akayla of green Reth's Weyrwomanship was upturned by the return of a gold dragon to the Weyr. Akayla had allowed the Goldrider to do so rather unwillingly, but had no say against the greater authority of Falconth. Reth was quite happy to relinquish her leadership.
Turns passed, and Thaira became a shrewd woman. She was angry at the lack of respect she received from Holders, and fought to gain back some semblance of leadership back to the Weyr. At least to be heard at Conclave.
She was in the middle of this process when a man, bloody and hurt, appeared from Between on his bronze.
